Beal

Beal Ice Line

In short

BEAL presents the very lightest double rope. Its extremely low impact force is excellent news for less-than-perfect belay points in ice and on mixed routes. A trump card that no alpinist can ignore.

The beal Iceline is a great rope. It is however expensive. The question is; Is the cost worth the quality. In my opinion yes, I have the 60m version (there is also a 50m), and they are great for winter climbing. The diameter of the rope (8.1mm) can be a little off putting simply because they are just so small! Coupled with a Petzl Reverso3 (in my case) they are excellent to use, and they are also dry treated with Beal's Goldendry technology, ensuring they remain as dry as possible in sodden winter conditions.

Overall, expensive....but worth it

I just love the combination of light weight and low impact forces of Beal Ice Line. The low impact force means soft landings, but also that it's pretty stretchy. The amount of stretch can be a bit surprising every now and then. The other main characteristics of Beal Ice Line are the low diameter and fairly "slipery" feel - which I kind of like too; It is easy to pay out and the knots open fairly easily (even after series of rappels from abalakovs). Beal Ice Line stays dry well and is durable at least while used in normal ice climbing conditions.

There are certain limitations as well. For top roping it's a bit too thin and stretchy, especially if you're using one strand only. Based on how I've seen the mantel works on that type of "single strand" situation I would expect that the rope will wear down quite quickly. I.e. to maximize the life span of your Ice Line I would avoid lowering heavy loads with single strand (i.e. top roping with single strand and counter balanced rappelling)... on the other hand, who uses this type of elite rope for top roping anyways?-) --> Ice Line is at best on long multi-pitch ice routes, you should take it where it belongs. :-)

  • Low impact force
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent build quality
  • Ease of handling
  • Stretch
