The North Face Base Camp Duffel

In short

Watch the luggage carousel at any airport and you’ll see Base Camp Duffel bags pouring out and being collected by explorers from around the world. It's not your average duffel bag. Made from a durable laminate material, the Base Camp Duffel is a bomber of a bag that’s resilient enough to take the punishment that Air France baggage handlers can throw at it or uncooperative yaks, camels and mules. A favourite luggage solution the world over with expeditions, yachters, explorers and travellers, travelling without a Base Camp Duffel or two is like leaving your passport at home. You wouldn’t dare do it. Available in sizes small to xl – a whopping 140 litres of gear swallowing storage capacity.

Whatever anyone says about outsourcing production to the far east, poor quality, posers brand etc. these bags are still pretty hard to beat. (review of a 4 year old one)

I've lost count how many airline baggage handlers mine must have been abused by, how many times I've overfilled it, thrown pointy things into it, filled it with gear etc. Once dragged it about half a mile because I was too ill to carry it and it once got left outside a cramped tent in all weather for a month in the alps. Starting to look almost like I've used it a bit but still no tears/punctures etc.

Alpine straps are comfy, zips are bombproof (the cord/plastic tabs on them aren't though; you'll inevitably have to replace them with tat if you overfill), the big sewn handles on the ends/sides are really well sewn in. Should easily last another ten years.

Had mine for 3 years and it is still good as new. It has been on summer and winter trips at least 3 times a year as well as being used for countless weekends away as an ordinary holdall. The shape is good as it allows the whole space to be used unlike some other more technical bags where the shape means it is hard to stuff all your gear in. The lid is great, allowing easy access to all your gear and you can easily see everything in there. The zips are bombproof, just like the rest of the bag. The shoulder straps are surprisingly comfy, you just have to be careful to put all your pointy things at the bottom so it doesn't dig into your back! The carry handles are really strong and have stood up to more abuse than I would care to admit.
The only down side is the price, there are cheaper bags out there but maybe not as good, I don't know.

I have used Base Camp Duffel(90 l) as my gear bag on outdoor trips. It is extremely robust and the design is very simple. In addition to main space it has only one mesh pocket inside the lid. The main space is big enough for all casual climbing and/or skiing gear and the mesh pocket is great for example repair supplies, file and other small stuff.
The bag has also wide shoulder straps so that you can carry it on your back. The straps are surprisingly good and carrying even a full/heavy bag is very comfortable.

Empty bag can be compressed relatively small. The bag is sold with a storage bag in which the compressed bag can be packed when not used.

Only complain I can find from the bag is the shape. Barrel shape is a little tricky to pack if you want to pack it as full as possible. A bit more square shaped bag would probably be easier to pack.

  • Comfortable shoulder straps
  • Durable
  • Simple design
  • storage bag
  • can be compressed in a small space
  • Barrel shape
