Ski Tourers

Ski touring is a form of backcountry skiing (off-piste skiing) involving
traveling over the winter landscape on skis under human power rather
than through the use of ski lifts or snow vehicles. It can take place in
terrain ranging from perfectly flat to extremely steep. In either case,
unlike alpine skiing, the skier's heels must be free to allow a natural
walking motion while ascending and traversing. Ski touring has
parallels with hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering.

COOMBAck is said to be one of the best off piste oriented allround skis. I can easily join to the crowd of Coomback praisers.

Coombacks can be said to be fat (102mm under foot). They are designed to be well performing ski but still as lightweight as possible. Because of this they don't have any kind of metal coating to give extra stiffness (and extra weight). With full rocker tip and good flexibility they float very well on soft snow and are easy and pleasure to ride. However, on harder surfaces the lack of stiffness shows up. The skis become a bit lively and riding them on hardpack needs more strength than stiffer skis do. This is not a big problem if you have muscle on your legs or keep your speed slow but it is not so enjoyable. Especially when compared to the joy they give when riding on powder the performance on icy hardpack is poor. On non-icy hardpack they still ski pretty well and are enjoyable if you have enough strength.

All in all, Coombacks are almost perfect skis for off piste/touring oriented skiers, who occasionally skis on piste and want skis that are easy to ride. If you are skiing more on piste(=more hardpack) there are better skis on the market.

I have the 10/11 model. Newer 11/12 model has some carbon fiber coating to give more stiffness so they might behave a bit differently. However, based on what I have read, they are still pretty much the same skis as older ones.

I bought new Maestrales for this season and the first impression they have made is just simply amazement.

In general Maestrales are made of Pebax and have intuition innerboot. The innerboot feels very comfortable and warm. What is also noticeable is that my size 30 Maestrales innersole feels a bit wider than the 30,5 Dynafits sole, which is a bit surprising. This makes them really comfortable and better sitting boots for me than the dynafits.

However, the real ultimate feature in Maestrales is the cuff and its rotation. Thanks to flexible pebax and Scarpas design, it is really amazing how wide cuff-rotation ski boot can really have. Never even thought that I could walk with ski boots like any mountaineering or hiking boot with rigid sole and yet have a stiff skiing boot. There is no words to tell how free walking with Maestrales is. You have to experience it by yourself.

I can't wait to try these in real action.

Update:
Now that I have used them in action for a while I have not much to add on my first impressions. I have not thermoformed my innerboots but they fit for me perfectly. Boots are very warm and comfortable also on colder days. They are surprisingly stiff when locked to ski mode. Feel for the skis(K2 Coombacks) with Dynafit Radical FT:s is good enough to ski "casual" anything I want(up to 30-35? degrees from powder to icy hardpack). In other words they are joy to walk and ski up and downhill.

  • A perfect compromise skiboot?

I took these pants from sale last year and am more than happy to do so. Pants proved to be really comfortable, water- and windproof, light weight, amazingly stretchy and very breathable.
The fit is great and with stretchy and light weight fabrics, these pants are perfect for ice climbing. All zippers are waterproof and pockets are made of mesh fabric. Because of this you can adjust ventilation with side ventilations and pockets, which increases the comfort on warmer ski touring days. The fabric itself is also very breathable and the pants are amazingly comfortable on warmer days even when ventilations are closed.
Knees and cordura protections are durable but the cordura protections inside the legs should be a bit taller. I have kicked with crampons some holes on my pants because of this. Overall, the main fabric gets punctuated quite easily by crampons or sharp rocks. This is not a really big surprise for light weight pants and it can be avoided. It is also a small con compared to all advantages these pants have. If the fabric would be more robust, these pants would get five stars with no doubts.
